GREENWOOD
UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
Greenwood United Methodist Church was established in 1849 and in our 170+ year history, we have made many strides as a beacon for Christ to the world around us. In order to progress, it is important that we always remember where we came from, a modest building at the corner of Pearl and Meridian Streets. In 1887, to accommodate the growing congregation, we moved into a new brick building at the corner of Brewer and Broadway Streets where we resided until 1964 when it was inevitably outgrown. Then, in 1965, hundreds of families walked from that building to our present location on Madison Ave., carrying our Bibles and hymnals, Baptismal bowls and water pitcher, Communion chalice, and stained glass windows. The building may have been new, but the dedication of our congregation to spread Christ's love to our fellow Greenwood citizens remains unchanged to this day. We celebrate our multi-generational Greenwood families, the diversity of the world around us, and welcome all newcomers to the growing city. With our continued growth, the facility has grown and expanded over the years as we continue to do our best to be an accommodating place for all people, through services, special events, concerts, pre-school, mission outreaches, and more.

The education and outreach ministries of Boy Scouts of America and Greenwood UMC Preschool find great strength in diversity by welcoming all people, of all ethnic groups, backgrounds, and walks of life. In 2012 our expanded kitchen ministry added The Shepherd’s Table mission which serves warm meals and fellowship in Christ every Tuesday. Another benchmark in our history was welcoming thirty-seven Mizo (Burmese) families in 2013. Their number has now grown to over four hundred members!

The building itself is where the congregation meets. It is not what the church is! Our mission continues to offer people of all ages who have a desire to participate in Christian life, in a warm, caring and uplifting environment of prayer and worship. Our dedicated lay leaders give us spiritual inspiration, innovative programming, and motivation to keep Christian life an important part of our world today. May we continue to serve the generations of tomorrow as a church in the heart of the community, with the community in our hearts.
